Among the many closely guarded secrets at the Beijing Olympics, theme song is at the very top of the secret list. 5 songs stood out from more than 10,000 submissions to be shortlisted.
Olympic theme songs tend to be ostentatiously majestic. My favourite out of the 5 though is a refreshing tune that evokes folk songs of old Beijing. It’s called 北京欢迎您/Bei3 jing1huan1 ying2 nin2/ Beijing Welcomes You. If the other songs are grand prime ribs, this one is a sorbet, like a dash of summer rain. The music video takes you to different parts of Beijing while a comprehensive congregation of celebrities from the Chinese speaking world each gets to sing one line. If you are patient enough to get through the entire 6:50 minutes, you will have a good taste of Beijing and who’s who of our show biz.
Hi, I am Jenny Zhu from ChinesePod.com. I bring you a slice of the Chinese language and culture in the daily podcast. But there is so much more than what a podcast has time for, so jennyzhu.com is a space of observation and reflection on the big, small and everything in between about China.

Hope this song gets annointed as the theme song, which begs the question: who makes the decision?

Jenny,
Thanks for sharing this MV. I had to watch it on youtube, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6EC_s4vrpW8, because youku is slow. Now I have to find the text of the lyrics and study it. The font for the text on the MV is too small for my eyes!
With all the stars in this MV, wouldn’t this song be favored to be selected as the Olympic theme song? Did these stars sing the other four songs? Can you share the links to the other four songs.
I do like the music of this song. After all these years, I still can’t believe Jackie Chan is considered a singer in Asia.

This tune is ringing in my head for a week now. I feel very welcomed by Beijing.
Art,
Jackie Chan’s passion for singing exemplifies the Olympic spirit of participation.
ewong,
李宇春 is my favourite Super Girl. Some people think she bears some resemblance to Yao Ming.

This one has English subtitles and lists the names of the singers. I am only familiar with five of them by face.

I love this son so much! To me it looks like a message from the chinese to the world, how there want to be it an to look like and how the want to be themselves. I think in many aspects they already have achieved it.
I’m not sure if the “chinese way of life” is the better, but shurely it is the most beautifull. Congratulations to the best Olympic Games I have ever seen. You are great people and you have a great country.
I anybody has the chinese text to it in word format I would be very thankfull to get it. Thank you.

Tabea,
Harmony is the central theme for China in the past few years. I think the song reflects it very well. Here is the lyrics:
你和我
同一个世界下
心连心
我们是一家
为了共同的梦想
我们跋山涉水
来到北京相聚
一起来吧
让我一起分享奥运的喜悦
你和我
同在一个世界
我们永远是一家
you and me
from one world
heart to heart
we are one family
for dreams we travel
thousands of miles
we meet in beijing
come together
the joy we share
you and me
from one world
forever we are one family
